Una Burke

Fashion meets conceptual art, these pieces are based on the subject of Trauma, they make me shiver and feel wierd but for some reason they are really attractive at the same time. They are almost like wierd bondage shells, or a carcass, From her Re.treat series, these pieces are hand made from leather. When it is dyed she uses vegetable dye- to get the skin tone colour, once the body is removed from the leather the shape of a distorted figure is left. Almost like a shell!

The pieces are reminiscent to medical equiptment such as braces etc- that might be used to help with posture/ broken bones/ bad backs etc. Linking these pieces with the idea of healing perhaps?

M.E Design Mag describes it as "tackling something that most can relate to on one level or another, either though personal experience or by association. Victims of traumatic encounters often create subconscious emotional barriers as a means of protection against the re-occurrence of pain. These barriers have the potential to become a trapping device, resulting in an inability to function in certain situations, and Burke has translated the feelings and emotions associated with this topic into a visual language of physical gestures."

Once I read and understood the concept I saw the pieces in a completely different light. I found them really inspiring and captivating, not sure why, I think it's the shapes and the restriction.

Definately one to watch
